    Important to remember that these weapoms were not designed for this sport. This sport values men and kote. So leg sweeps or body strikes wont mean anything. Which is dumb.

    For those who keep talking "real fights", kendo and probably the naginata, is obviosly a sport. Hint are the solid hits by the swoard beeing not scored, or the fact they dont mean to just touch the opponent like i would assume about hema.

    I come bsck to this video every now and then, and given youtube (and recording software) allows us to, not only watch at 0.25x speed, but also record and replay frame by frame, the last 2 frames of 1:53 and first frame of 1:54 you see the end of the naginata bend. It's a point for White, they just didn't call it. I don't know how scoring works, but given the reverse has happened, Black has always gotten the point. It's just frustrating to keep seeing this occur in different events across Japan.

    The naginata wielder is standing like a statue, he needs more footwork. The swordsman kept closing the distance without much effort.

    It's fascinating how the rules completely change how the game is played. So many strikes would have certainly been deadly or at least grievous wounds if they were using real blades. The rules however dictate extreme quality of strikes and limited hit boxes so defense can be as little as moving so that you're hit somewhere other than a point zone. I will say it lends greatly to the aesthetic of the fighting. You rarely see such clean fencing in western martial arts. Most likely due to the fact that the quality of blow is rarely judged, only the making of it and almost everything is a valid target.

      I recall that I read somewhere most recorded samurai duels were decided by minutes of circling followed by one stroke. Although stylized, perhaps this is not so unrealistic.

      Considering there is no affiliated Jukendo or Tankendo club in the USA, even 6 years after this video was made, they learned from watching video online or going to a seminar once. His stance is all wrong, he strikes way too low, even his Men he got awarded an Ippon on was a Kendo Men and not a Tankendo Men. When performing a Seitai (the grabbing part) the opponent should be unbalanced whilst doing so and you are allowed only one strike.

    Naginata is the main weapon of the monk soldiers, and during the Warring States period, Japanese Buddhist temples had territories and were armed. Influential temples have vast territories and many followers, and have begun to have the same power as the landlord. Rebellion was caused in various places using believers all over Japan. Therefore, Nobunaga Oda slaughtered the temple and the monk soldiers. In addition, Naginata became a necessary skill for women who care for the landlord's wife and daughter, and became a means of self-defense.

    Big respect with these practicioners but the way they use the Naginata is BS. The most effective way to use the naginata is by THRUSTING and not slashing. Slashing is only a secondary option. In REAL combat thrusting is the best way to fend of enemies with the swords or the same weapon.

      In Kendo you have to be very specific where you hit and how you hit for the point to count. The Naginata's strikes were certainly deadly in a real fight but for the sport, it doesn't count as a point.

  • @4shunhere

    • @Aureliano5174
      @Aureliano5174 4 года назад

      You mean nito (two swords) vs itto (single sword). Nito and Itto have a lot of similarities, because eventually you are using a sword. Naginata however is a different weapon and a different martial art. However, the rules are similar to kendo, so engagement is possible

    As an epee fencer this locked pausing makes no sense to me.

    • @Aureliano5174
      @Aureliano5174 4 года назад

      The rules are different. I am not an epee fencer, but from what I know, in epee the entire body is a valid target, and the hit is scored by computer. In naginata and kendo, in order for the a hit to be valid strike, there are a lot of parameters that need to be adressed. Mainly a correct posture which supports the strike, a precise hit in the likited designated area with a specific place of the blade, and good fighting spirit. Only when at least 2 out of 3 judges see that these parameters have been met, they raise the flag. So in close quarters, both opponents are trying to find a way to separate while keeping guard and seeking opportunities to strike.

      nah, they are getting close because they can only use the part near the tip to strike the opponent, being close means being safe from the opponent weapon, in a real fight we would probably see blood before it turns into a brawl
